The saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" has new meaning in light of a recent large-scale Swedish nutritional study. Over the course of the 13 year project with over 70 thousand participants, researchers confirmed that the participants eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day experienced on average 3 more years of life. Eating healthier foods may go hand-in-hand with healthier lifestyle decisions, which is even more motivation to think clean when making food choices. Think of what an impact an extra three years of life may have by simply replacing processed and high-calorie snacks with nutritious meals.

Detoxing From Detox Diets

Summer brings beautiful weather, and along with it pressure to look good in lighter clothing. Many people procrastinate losing weight until the season of outdoors is in full-swing, which may lead to reaching for the latest fad detox diet. Most of these extreme diet plans encourage dangerously low-calorie fasting guided by herbs, teas, or similar items that promote increased bowel movement to clean out the colon. If you think this type of diet sounds dangerous, you are in good company with many nutrition experts. A prominent Epidemiologist at Harvard School of Public Health, Frank Sacks, warns: "There is no basis in human biology that indicates we need fasting or any other detox formula to detoxify the body because we have our own internal organs and immune system to take care of excreting toxins." Try focusing on healthy living decisions such as eating a clean or maybe even organic diet full of nutrients inherently packed with detoxification properties.

Think Positive, Live Longer

A new report published in the American Journal of Cardiology suggests that having an optimistic outlook on life actually decreases the chance of suffering a cardiac emergency. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University followed over 1400 healthy siblings of people who suffered a coronary event such as a heart attack. These siblings filled out a well-being survey, rating themselves from 0 to 110 in areas such as mood, energy, and overall anxiety levels. During a 12-year follow up of the participants, researchers found a one-third lower incidence of cardiac events in those whose survey answers reflected positive well-being. Although a cheerful temperament is something people are born with, participating in positive-reinforcement activities such as yoga or meditation may help ease stress levels. Exercising and eating healthy meals with a friend are also great outlets for periods of stress. Everyone is different, but finding stress relief is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart.
